Mountain Weather Forecast

A stable ridge of high pressure in B.C. will continue to be the dominant weather feature. Across most of B.C., expect alpine sunshine and valley clouds. The stable weather pattern allows a temperature inversion to set up over BC. Alpine temperatures may reach as high as 5 degrees for the interior ranges, and 5 to 10 degrees over Vancouver Island and South Coast ranges.

An incoming Pacific weather system will collide with the ridge today. However, the ridge will act as a barrier for the incoming system and deflect it towards the southern Yukon.

For Wednesday, a renewed push of fresh Arctic air will swing into B.C. from the Yukon/NWT. The front will bring light snow and brisk northerly winds. In the wake of the front, expect clearing but cold conditions as the fresh Arctic air settles in.

Along the mainland coast, moderate outflow winds reaching 50 km/h are expected near mainland inlets. On Wednesday, the push of fresh Arctic air will make its way to the north and central coastline where outflow winds will increase to 70 to 90 km/h. The south coast inlets including Howe Sound will see strong outflow winds of 50 to 70 km/h develop Wednesday night.

The upper ridge remains firmly in place over southwestern BC today. As a result, any incoming Pacific moisture is deflected north towards the Alaskan Panhandle and southern Yukon. Thickness lines (orange and blue dashed lines) slightly increase over the southern half of BC indicating a modest warming trend aloft.

The weather pattern changes tonight as an Arctic front develops along the BC-Yukon border. The front can be identified along where the dashed blue lines are the most compact, indicating a large temperature difference (relatively warm ahead of the front and very cold behind the front). The front will continue to progress through B.C. through Wednesday. Moisture along this front will be squeezed out as snow. At the same time, a cold and dry north flow will begin to set up across B.C. tonight which continues to develop through Wednesday.
