Avalanche Canada is hosting webinars through this season. We have presentations focusing on various aspects of avalanche safety, beneficial for all backcountry recreationists. The webinars are free, but preregistration is required. Links to register for these events will become available a few weeks prior to each webinar.
These live webinars will be held on Wednesday evenings (7–8 pm Pacific Time), but all of them will be recorded and made available from our website after the event if you are unable to attend.

Wed. Oct. 25: Recognizing Avalanche Terrain and Trip Preparedness. Are you new to the backcountry or looking for a refresher? We focus on the basics of avalanche terrain, how to recognize and avoid avalanche terrain, what equipment is needed and what resources are available. Join our Avalanche Canada forecaster to decipher the nuances of terrain, recognize hazards and help you safely route-find on your adventures this season. We will also cover trip planning and preparedness with a presentation from BC AdventureSmart. Sponsored by MEC.
Wed. Nov. 8: Stoke Your Approach. This is an excellent early season tune-up for all sledders. We'll discuss planning your trip, reviewing the daily process, matching the terrain to the conditions, and choosing a mindset. Putting all the pieces together will help you have the best day out possible.
Wed. Nov. 22: History Repeats. Do you like to ski out-of-bounds at the ski hills? Have you ever been tempted to go into a closed area? This presentation takes a look at defining those areas, looking at incident frequency and delving into two case histories, resulting in tragic fatalities. There is always more to learn, and it's important to exercise your discipline.
Wed. Dec. 6: From Planning to Powder. Learn the tips and tricks from the pros for both planning your backcountry adventure and then verifying that the conditions warrant your plan. Did the conditions change? How do check before you head into the field and how do you evaluate the conditions once you are in the field? This webinar sets out to help you answer these questions.
Wed. Dec. 13: Be Avy Savvy -- What SAR wants you to know. Join AJ Maheu, a volunteer with North Shore Rescue and avalanche forecaster, and Lisa Paulson, Visitor Safety Specialist with Banff and ACMG guide, to learn more about how to keep yourself safe on your backcountry adventures this winter. What do you need to know, and how do you need to prepare, so you aren't the one being rescued?
Wed. Jan. 10: Using the Mountain Weather Forecast. Interested in learning more about the weather, how to predict it, how it will affect the snowpack, and what it means to your riding? Are you a weather fanatic and keen to dig deeper into the complexities of weather? Find out how to best utilize tools found on the Mountain Weather Forecast and related weather apps with guest presenter Ross MacDonald, from Environment Canada and Avalanche Canada forecaster, Simon Horton.
Wed. Jan. 17: Choosing Terrain for Skiers. Join us in this interactive webinar to learn more about choosing terrain for the conditions. There's a common expression: "when snowpack is the problem, terrain is the solution." Our field tech and forecaster, Colin Garritty will lead you through a series of exercises to help you hone this essential skill for traveling safely in the backcountry.
Wed. Jan. 31: Choosing Terrain for Snowmobilers. Join our forecaster and field tech, Martina Halik, for this fun and engaging session looking at a variety of terrain and "choosing" where you would go under varying conditions. Terrain is always the answer to backcountry fun and safety. Martina will share tips and tools to help you hone this essential skill for traveling safely in the backcountry.
Wed. Feb. 14: Navigation 101: Using Digital Tools. Join our avalanche pros to learn more about using digital navigational tools (like FATMAP or GAIA). We'll learn more about how to use them to plan your trip before heading out, and help you make proper terrain assessments when you are in the field.
Wed. Feb. 21: Avalanche Problems. What are the various avalanche problems? How do these affect the danger ratings? This webinar digs deeper into the avalanche forecast so you will be better informed and make better decisions in the backcountry. Join Avalanche Canada forecaster, Simon Horton, to understand the nuances and character of these problems - and how to avoid them.
Wed. March 6: Managing March. Whether it's a deep persistent layer, remote triggering, step-down avalanches, significant warming or other avalanche problem, March is often an avalanche-prone month with the potential for avalanche incidences. We'll take a look at the pressing concerns that we are presented with this season.
