Online webinar series exceeds expectations

More than 5,300 people attended Avalanche Canada's 2020-21 online webinar series

Avalanche Canada's free webinar series was received with tremendous enthusiasm over the winter, with more than 5,300 attendees tuning into 19 different sessions.

The weekly webinar series was created to replace the in-person events that have been a staple of our outreach since AvCan’s founding in 2004. With in-person outreach not possible due to Covid-19, we made the decision to move online. Doing so proved to be hugely beneficial and allowed us to reach thousands of people, and hear from them directly.

The webinars covered a diverse range of topics, from trip planning to mountain weather to prominent avalanche tragedies. We hosted webinars for all winter backcountry recreationists—snowshoers, hikers, snowmobilers, skiers, snowboarders, and ice climbers. They were geographically varied—our new field team in Newfoundland & Labrador presented on close calls in that province, while the final webinar looked at conditions in the Yukon.

We are very thankful to our numerous partners who presented at these webinars alongside our avalanche forecasters and field team members:

We’d like to thank the thousands of people who watched and enlivened the presentations with their questions and comments. We appreciate their enthusiasm.

All the webinars were recorded and are available for viewing online. We will be continuing these webinars next winter, even if in-person outreach is allowed.
