Avalanche Canada

Supporting the work of Canada’s national public avalanche safety organization is the main focus of the Avalanche Canada Foundation.

Through the help of our donors and supporters, Avalanche Canada can continue to provide its world-leading programs and tools that help winter backcountry users of all types better manage their risk in avalanche terrain. These programs include providing daily public avalanche forecasts, developing and coordinating public avalanche education in Canada, delivering youth awareness and training seminars, creating and delivering programs targeting specific user groups, and contributing to snow safety research.

Donating to the foundation allows you to show your support for Avalanche Canada—which is both non-government and non-profit—while benefiting from the tax advantages of donating to a registered Canadian charity. Donations of $25 or more are eligible for a tax receipt.

Grants, Scholarships and Memorial Funds

Grants from the Avalanche Canada Foundation

The Avalanche Canada Foundation funds projects that meet one or more of its goals:

  • Information— Support public avalanche bulletins and warnings that will reduce avalanche risk through adequate regional coverage, publication frequency, and relevance to user groups.
  • Education—Support public avalanche safety education and awareness programs for school-aged and adult learners.
  • Research—Support research into topics that will reduce public avalanche risk, or further knowledge of snow avalanches in a field applicable to public avalanche risk reduction.

The board of directors will review applications annually. Applications must be submitted electronically by September 30. The Foundation has established a grants committee, a standing committee of the Board, which recommends grants to the Board. This grants committee acts as a selection committee when reviewing scholarship applications. The five-member grants committee includes representation from:

  • The Canadian Avalanche Association, Canada's association of avalanche professionals
  • Avalanche Canada, Canada's national public avalanche safety organization
  • A member from the Foundation's Board of Directors
  • At least one female member

Other Ways to Support

The Michel Trudeau Memorial Rose honours Michel Trudeau, killed in an avalanche in 1998. The Avalanche Canada Foundation receives a portion from each plant sold. These very fragrant, double deep pink flowers offer a lasting reminder of your commitment to public avalanche safety, and make a great gift.

Ask for the Michel Trudeau Memorial Rosebush at your favourite nursery, or order it from Adamson’s Heritage Nursery in Langley, British Columbia by email or telephone at 1-866-530-2476.
