Hugh and Helen Hincks Memorial Fund

Hugh & Helen Hincks Memorial Fund

Hugh & Helen Hincks were tragically killed as the result of an avalanche accident during an Austrian ski vacation in 2005. The Calgary-based couple are survived by their three children Morgan, Teddy and Daniel Hincks of Calgary. The Hincks’ children wanted to honour their parents’ love for winter mountain travel and their respect for furthering public avalanche safety initiatives, research and education by setting up the Hugh & Helen Hincks’ Memorial Fund through the Canadian Avalanche Foundation.

The response to the memorial fund in their parents’ names has been overwhelming. "For the Hincks family to set aside their immediate grief and try to make some sort of a positive out of such a tragedy by setting up this memorial fund with the CAF shows amazing character and strength," said CAF Past President, Chris Stethem.

At the request of the Hincks family, the Canadian Avalanche Foundation will manage and direct memorial funds toward avalanche education initiatives that will impact high school age people.  Since inception, the Fund has raised over $140,000 and funded the following projects:

  • -     $12,000 to the “Behind the Lines” website – an interactive project, now on Facebook, designed to educate young skiers and riders  and give them a medium to share their stories

-        $46,000 to “The Fine Line” – an avalanche education training video

-        $ 2,400 for the translation of “The Fine Line” into French

-      $15,000 to the Canadian Avalanche Centre to support youth education in the Shuswap region of BC
