The history of the Canadian Pacific is Canada’s history and, to a great extent, the history of the avalanche industry as well. The construction of the railway across BC’s Selkirk Mountains in 1885 forged a nation from sea to sea. But the building of a national dream, and its early years of operation, taught some difficult lessons about avalanches. Those lessons laid the groundwork for managing risk in avalanche terrain in Canada.
