The history of the Canadian Pacific is Canada’s history and, to a great extent, the history of the avalanche industry as well. The construction of the railway across BC’s Selkirk Mountains in 1885 forged a nation from sea to sea. But the building of a national dream, and its early years of operation, taught some difficult lessons about avalanches. Those lessons laid the groundwork for managing risk in avalanche terrain in Canada. Canadian Pacific and the CAF are proud to continue this legacy, working together to raise avalanche awareness and increase public safety.
