The history of the Canadian Pacific is Canada’s history and, to a great extent, the history of the avalanche industry as well. The construction of the railway across BC’s Selkirk Mountains in 1885 forged a nation from sea to sea. But the building of a national dream, and its early years of operation, taught some difficult lessons about avalanches. Those lessons laid the groundwork for managing risk in avalanche terrain in Canada. Canadian Pacific and the CAC are proud to continue this legacy, working together to raise avalanche awareness and increase public safety. Canadian Pacific is the presenting partner for Avalanche Awareness Days, a weekend event that raises awareness of avalanches from coast to coast to coast in 30 communities in Canada on the second weekend in January annually. A generous donation from Canadian Pacific allowed the development of this website.

Built in 1959, the Columbia Brewery is located in picturesque Creston, BC and is part of the rich brewing tradition of the Kootenay region. The brewery traces its heritage to the Fort Steele Brewery, established in 1898. Columbia Brewery began brewing its celebrated Kokanee lager in 1962. The small mountain brewery naturally ages each drop of Kokanee to exacting standards, to ensure each ounce of Kokanee is of the highest quality. Columbia Brewery is the title sponsor of our very popular Backcountry Avalanche Workshops, which offer backcountry recreationists the latest in techniques and tips for managing risk in avalanche terrain.

From humble beginnings to a national icon, the Mountain Equipment Co-op is a truly Canadian success story. Incorporated in 1971 with just six members, MEC is now the country’s largest supplier of quality outdoor equipment, with nearly two million members. In addition to its vibrant retail presence, the MEC is also deeply committed to the respectful use of the outdoors, which makes its partnership with the CAC a natural fit. MEC is the presenting sponsor of our Avalanche Skills Training program, helping to bring high-quality, relevant and usable avalanche education to a broad range of winter backcountry users.
